Chennai, Jul 14 : DMK President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today expressed strong resentment against the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court for not according permission to an advocate to argue a case in Tamil.

Addressing DMK cadres through the party organ `Murasoli`, the five times Chief Minister asked when Hindi was being used as the language in the High Courts in states like Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, why not Tamil.

He pointed out that in a criminal case in Madras High Court in 2006, a former state minister Madurai Pon Muthuramalingam presented his arguments in Tamil. This was at the same time when the then DMK government passed a resolution seeking steps by the Centre and the union Law ministry on making Tamil the official language in Madras High Court as well.

He also said in 2010 when the DMK was in power, cases were argued in the High Court in Tamil and the then CJ Iqbal had also passed an order permitting the use of Tamil in the High Court. But now a Judge had turned down permission to a litigant to allow her lawyer to argue in Tamil, he alleged.

The advocates who protested against this launced an agitation, he said and demand that the Centre and the state must understand that the demand was justified.

The Centre must intervene and permit use of Tamil in High Court as in the case of Hindi and obtain permission from the Supreme Court legally, getting the President`s consent also, he demanded.
